Yesterday THR reported thatPhillip Phillips, who's heading to the American Idolfinale with Jessica Sanchez, was in severe pain and required emergency surgery to treat ongoing kidney problems.
Last year's runner-up responds to reports that the season-11 rocker refused emergency surgery before the show's finale.
As fans give their support, oneIdol veteran -- season 10'sHaley Reinhart -- is extending her well wishes, too.The 21-year-old alt-rocker from Leesburg, Georgia, refused treatment during his hometown visit last
weekend, in order to keep up with the show's tight shooting schedule; with the finale just days away, he's taking it easy while postponing an operation.
"I appreciate his sense of self and he knows who he is. I heard he's feeling under the weather, too, so I hope things go well for him with everything," a concerned Reinhart told THR at Friday's benefit concert in New York City for She's The First, a nonprofit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world.
Reinhart, who lost the 2011 crown to country singerScotty McCreery, said of this year's season, "I've seen a lot of it, you know, when I'm around. I think it's been a great run -- and Jessica Sanchez, I'm been rooting for that girl since day one."
Added Reinhart: "She's definitely a powerhouse, and she's only 16. It's kind of crazy."
Earlier in the day, Idol sources told THR that Phillips has been experiencing pain "so severe" that he's been given permission to sit out the weekly high-concept (and physically exhausting) Ford video shoots for the past few weeks.
"I've been sick, so they gave me those days to rest," Phillips said of his absence. The network had no comment on Phillips' health status.
Phillips received emergency medical treatment in March for extreme abdominal pain but recovered in time for the Top 13 results show. He's a favorite to take the title when the winner is announced May 23 on Fox.
